When things get hard sometimes our spirits can get down, but they don’t have to stay down.
We all go through tough times in life and can have a range of emotions at any given time. Whether it is everyday life struggles, life-altering events like a pandemic, fighting for racial injustice, or other unknown reasons.
I get it. I know it is not easy. I also know how important it is to recognize what you are feeling and figure out ways to navigate through those feelings.
Once you navigate through your feelings, try some of the ideas below to help keep your spirits up:
Ideas of Things to Do to Keep Your Spirits Up
This is not an all-inclusive list of ideas that will help to uplift your spirits, but they can be critical to bringing more positivity into your everyday life.
Positive Self Talk (Affirmations)
Speaking positive words to yourself is the best thing you can do to keep your spirits up. Affirmations are a powerful mind tool that can help set the tone for your day. Doing this first thing in the mornings is a great way to start your day.
Some of my favorite daily affirmations are:
- I am Healthy
- I am Powerful
- I am Blessed
- I am Confident
- I am Enough
- I am Courageous
- I am a Leader
- I have the Power to Create Change
- I am Excited About This New Day Filled with New Opportunities
Getting outside can be a real mood changer. Taking a walk, hike, run, or even just sitting outside for 20 minutes can have a wide range of health benefits. Sunlight provides vitamin D, which has been linked to helping fight depression and other conditions. Exercise, itself, can be an additional mood booster.
Turn off the noise
Turn off the television, log off of social media, unsubscribe to emails, and remove yourself from negative/draining conversations.
With the ongoing news and events, constantly seeing it can become very overwhelming and stressful. Sometimes you will have to disconnect to find peace.
Have moments throughout the day to take a pause. This could be a time that you schedule or just when you need a moment. I like to take five minutes each day to practice gratitude. In those five minutes, I verbally list things that I am thankful for at that moment or that day. This could be a time that you meditate, pray, or use it to reset yourself to continue to push thru the day.
Get that sleep! Rest is required and essential to keep going. Find out how many hours of rest your body needs and get it! Personally, naps have become important in helping me get the full 8 hours of sleep that I need.
Keep things simple. When life is pulling us in many directions, because we wear so many hats, we have to learn how to simplify some things.
Meals – make a plan for the week/month. Set a day to meal prep/cook for a few meals throughout the week
Bills – set up bill pay and have it automatically deducted
Work – Batch work and have a schedule that keeps you on task and organized
Find areas in your life where you can do things ahead of time that will save time in the long run…doing this can sometimes save you money!
Take care of yourself. Find ways you can practice self-care. It can be a long bath, sleeping in, or doing some retail therapy. Do something that makes you feel good.
Remember that you must take care of yourself before you can take care of anyone else.
Practice Acts Kindness
Yep, do something for someone else. Making someone else feel good can backfire (in a good way) and make you feel good. This could be giving time, money, or services to an organization, strangers, friends, or family.
Celebrate the Wins
Celebrate the wins in life no matter how small they may seem. Got a promotion? Celebrate! Worked out 3 straight days? Celebrate! Got to work on time? Celebrate!
Have you ever laughed at something and forgot about whatever problem you had 10 minutes ago? Find something that makes you laugh. It could be a movie, meme, or a funny memory. Laugh it out!
Spend time with people you love
Enjoy the human connection and interaction with people you love. Maybe have a game or movie night. Have a family video chat. Spending time with loved ones is a great way to lift your spirits.
Write it out
Get your thoughts down on paper and out of your head. Remember to let it go as you write it out. This can be in your private journal, on a blog, or through notes to friends.
Sometimes we need to talk it out with a professional. If you feel like you have done all you know how and still seem stuck and a bit down, seek help.
Staying positive is not always easy. It is something you work on daily. It’s important to know when to let things go and choose to be positive.
Let these ideas help guide you on ways to keep your spirits up in uncertain times.
